Welcome to our new Adjunct – Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins

As reported in our last newsletter, two safety researchers linked to the Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre (EPCRC) are now based at RMIT. Joining new arrivals in the Centre for Construction Work Health and Safety Research are Associate Professor Jan Hayes, Dr Vanessa McDermott and Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins from ANU has taken up an adjunct appointment with PCPM. On 10 April, approximately 50 people across academia and industry attended the locally held presentation by Emeritus Professor Andrew Hopkins about his recent book “Risky Rewards: How Company Bonuses Affect Safety.” The presentation was followed by a lively discussion about the applicability of Andrew’s work to the construction sector showing every sign that this is the start of a new and interesting research partnership for all concerned.
Centre for Construction Work Health and Safety Research joins forces with the Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Reflecting the broadening focus of the Centre, we have recently been invited to join the Institute of Chemical Engineers Safety Centre (ISC) see http://www.ichemesafetycentre.org/. Academic membership of the Centre is by invitation only. As a Supporting Partner, we look forward to advising the chemical industry on a range of broad brush safety matters such as process safety competencies and performance indicators.
