An interview with Thyagi Rashantha Thotage Fernando – Student of the Construction Management Undergraduate degree.

Where are you working now?

Muller Partnership”

What is your role and what activities does your role entail on a daily basis?

I’m currently working there as a cadet quantity surveyor and I prepare progress claims, reports, check estimates, pre-tender estimates and invoices on a daily basis. In addition I liaise with the suppliers to get quotations for pricing of the items in the estimates.”

What was your favourite part of your degree?

Having guest speakers from the industry as part of the lectures.”

What do you like best about your role?

Getting the opportunity to learn new things everyday as I get to work across various types of projects.”

What attracted you to your role?

I enjoy doing challenging work.”

What is most important to you when looking for a job?

Work Environment and the opportunities for career growth.”

Tell us about your career journey so far.

It has been a great pleasure to work for Muller Partnership. I must say the training provided from the company is excellent. The working environment is truly appropriate for a lady.”

Tell us about the challenges and triumphs you have faced as a female in a male-dominated industry

If you could say one thing to young females looking to enter the industry – what would it be?

Regardless of the gender, if you believe in yourself nothing is impossible. I strongly believe that the construction industry is one of the best industries for women who get driven by challenging work.”

Anything else you would like to share?

In my perspective I believe that more women should be working on construction sites.”
