Densification and urban futures

High-density living has been viewed as a key strategy to manage urban growth, and is increasingly becoming a feature in city planning. The increasing number and scale of high-density developments, usually in the form of multi-storey apartments, have had state government intensification policies around metropolitan planning come under review.

This Forum will address the physical aspects of building climatology and urban microclimate. There will also be a comprehensive discussion on understanding the interaction within buildings, between buildings and the surrounding outdoor spaces.

Date: Thursday, November 24.

Time: 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Presentations will finish at approximately 7.30pm, followed by networking drinks and finger food until 9pm.

Venue: The Treasury Theatre, Lower Plaza, 1 Macarthur St, East Melbourne. Take the stairs next to the white umbrellas in the courtyard, down to the lower plaza. The theatre is on the left, under the stairs.

Speakers Leanne Hodyl, Hodyl + Co Hodyl will address the following questions: To what degree is high-rise living meeting the needs of residents, both now and in the longer term? What planning and design policies need to be in place to ensure a tower apartment is also a home? Professor Matthaios Santamouris, UNSW Santamouris will discuss the urban heat island and its serious impact on the energy consumption of buildings during summer periods. He will also cover the impact on the environmental quality of the indoor and outdoor spaces, as well the repercussions on human health. Mitigation techniques to counter-balance the impact of climate change and the urban heat island effect will be presented. Andrew Carre, RMIT University Carre’s presentation will provide a brief overview of a number of contemporary research projects being undertaken at RMIT’s Sustainable Building Innovation Lab. The projects discussed will relate to the ways in which Melbourne’s existing indoor and outdoor environments can be assessed and what might be learned from such contemplation.
